Atlantic City Electric Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

Purpose

The Beach Haven Taxpayers Association requests Congressman Jeff Van Drew’s assistance
to turn off activation of Atlantic City Electric’s Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Beach Haven until independent safety are completed.

Key Concerns

• First deployment of this technology within ACE’s service territory, with limited
• operating experience.
• Facility is located in the center of a densely populated seasonal tourist community.
• Potential risks cited include thermal runaway fires, toxic gas releases, environmental
• contamination, and challenges to emergency evacuation.
• Project is located near major public attractions and along Long Beach Island’s primary evacuation corridor.

Legal and Regulatory Issues

• BHTA argues ACE’s 2022 Land Use Board application understated or omitted known
• lithium-ion battery hazards.
• Association contends the application did not adequately disclose the technology or its potential risks.

Requested Actions

• Request deactivation of the lithium-ion Battery Storage System (BESS)
• Request the immediate removal of the lithium-ion Battery Storage System (BESS) from the Bough of Beach Haven

Bottom Line

BHTA urges federal and individual taxpayer association boards intervention, stating that Beach Haven officials and many residents of Long Beach Island oppose activation the facility. 1387 concerned citizens has signed a petition opposing the facility since it is operational in the center of Beach Haven positioned in a residential area on a barrier island,
posing serious safety risks to residents, local businesses, visitors, and our environment. Its
proximity to homes, the town center, and the only evacuation route is particularly alarming.
